Email Marketing – Would You Like That Served With Double Or Single Opt-In?

In the USA, Double opt-in has been considered now as Best Practice for many a year. However, many of you may be surprised to know that double opt-in is not a CAN-SPAM requirement, nor is it a requirement of countries which have the toughest legislations.

So why then double opt-in? What are the benefits of double opt-in and why have not other countries embroidered it as Best Practice as heartily as the USA?

In a nutshell, I believe that it is to do with the amount of spamming a country produces. Whilst there are some other benefits of double opt-in, the main benefit is that you have foolproof evidence that a subscriber has signed up.

This is beneficial within the USA for 2 reasons:

1: The USA in general has an Opt out legislation.

2: The USA has the 2nd highest amount of spammers worldwide.

The results of the above is that generally speaking, recipients in the USA tend to hit the 'this is spam' button rather than the 'unsubscribe' link, due to the more lax legislation, which requires respondents to unsubscribe rather than subscribe. Therefore, if you use double opt-in and are accused with spamming, you can, armed with your irrefutable double opt-in information for the complainant, approach the ISP when you're blacklisted and refute the charge.

However, this is not the case with countries which have 'opt-in' legislation such as UK, Australia, France, Italy, Germany and the likes … As their legislation is based on opt-in, rather than opt-out, the practice of reporting as spam instead of unsubscribing has not been as big an issue, which in turn generally reduces the chances of being blacklisted.

Therefore, due to stricter legislation and less spamming activity, other countries have not implemented double opt-in as stringently as the USA has – basically, because the need has not been there.

Before we go any further, let's look at some definitions:

Single Opt-in: Single Opt-in is considered as a subscriber registrants to receive email communications from yourself via either sending an email to you requesting to subscribe or subscribing using a form on your website. A confirmation or 'welcome' email may or may not be sent. I'm not sure about the percentage of legitimate marketers using 'single opt-in' VS 'single -opt-in with confirmation email', however from my observations; it would appear as though the major send either either an automated confirmation email (required by most ESP's) or a welcome email.

Double Opt-in (other known as 'Confirmed Opt-in' or 'Closed Loop Opt-in'): This goes one step further. Within the confirmation email, a request is made for the subscriber to click on a link to finalise their subscription request. Only upon clicking on this link are they subscribed.

Each side of this debate has legitimate reasons for their preferred choice, so let's look at the positives and negatives of each:

The Case for and against Single Opt-in (with confirmation email):

You retain 100% of your subscribers. Providing, also that you send a confirmation or welcome email, you should also be able to determine immediately whether the email which was used for the subscription was a functioning email address.

From a Business point of view, single opt-in's lead the way. As Ann Holland from MarketingSherpa succinctly stated:

"Professional publishing means running your company as a business. It's smart business to not put barriers in front of a sale (or opt-in).

"If I changed my company's policy to double opt-in – which would reduce our new monthly opt-ins by probability 50% – I would then lose substantial revenues.
Not every company can afford to lose 30-50% of their potential subscribers. It is easy and tempting to pass off the 'lost subscribers' as not being worth anyhow, as obviously they were not interested enough to reply, but there's enough evidence to support that it's not just due to lack of interest that they are not completing the double opt-in process …

Bill Nussey from Silverpop recently said: "And, in my view, the only way to make customers even angrier than sending them unsolicited email, is NOT to send them the critical email updates that they went out of their way to request."

According to MarketingSherpa's Email Marketing Benchmark Guide 2007 (USA based), only 37% B2C firms use single opt-in. It is interesting to note, and therefore to put into perspective that all reports are based on reports based on this article. Your initial networking goal should be to get information and referrals, rather than a job. Identify the people you know who might be most useful for finding out more about the new position, industry sector or company you would like to work for. Arrange meetings with them if possible. The easiest way to approach this is to ask contacts who have leads for you to send an email or call the relevant person before you get in touch. When you call, briefly outline the reason why you'd like to meet. Ask for a short face to face meeting which will take no longer than 20 minutes. If a post is mentioned and the discussion seems to be changing into a job interview, then ask to come back at a later date for a proper interview.

Follow up

Keep records of all your discussions and follow up on any additional contacts. Send a short letter or email thanking the person you spoke to for their time. If you repeat this exercise, your range of contacts in your chosen industry will increase significantly. So will your chances of finding out about job opportunities before they ever get advertised.

Succeeding as a writer is a very hard thing to achieve. Unfortunately there are those out there willing to take advantage of writers and exploit their dreams of being published. A popular scam in print and online is known among other things as the Poetry Anthology scam.

The way it works is a struggling writer will stumble upon an advertisement for a poetry contest. This advertisement can be online or in a print magazine and will appear to be a legitimate writing contest. They may use fantastic claims of a valuable grand prize and promise that the winning entry, along with all the entries deemed to be finalists will be published in the anthology. Usually the ad will go on to describe how respected and well read the anthology is, even though you would have a hard time tracking down someone who’s heard of it.

The fact that the contest is free to enter will insure it has an air of legitimacy, after all how can it be a scam if they aren’t charging you to enter the contest? The only mention of money is that winners and all finalists will required to purchase a copy of the anthology, that’s not all that restrictive as what author wouldn’t mind buying a copy of an anthology they won a contest to be in? The scam rears its head in the fact that everyone that enters the contest ends up being a finalist, therefore they are required to purchase the anthology, and the price charged for the anthology is rather high. Writers end up paying a large fee to view their work published in an anthology that is filled with, most often, mediocre poetry and writing written by others who have also paid the substantial fee.

The publishers, or contest runners, have no intention to publish a well respected poetry anthology. Their only goal is to convince as many people as possible to pay the high dollar price for the book. Most of the time the book is actually printed and the publishers make a handsome profit off of sale of the books to everyone who entered, after all, remember everyone who entered was a finalist. Seldom are more copies printed than needed to distribute to the supposed finalists.

Other signs that indicate the poetry anthology contest is a scam are:

Many times the contest will be advertised in non-literary places, venues that would make you later reflect, why would they advertise a poetry contest in a magazine or website like that?

The name of the contest sounds very much like the name of a very real and famous contest or literary magazine.

Often times, though they claim previous winners have gone on to bigger things, they will not display the names of the previous winners of the contest for fear that someone will notice that these writers are not judged favorable in the literary field.

Another sign is that they are only accepting short submissions to be judged and printed in the anthology. This is for the financial gain of the publishers as it makes the book shorter and cheaper to print.

There are a number of legitimate contests and publishing houses to pursue getting published in, but generally these opportunities will be well known and carry none of the signs of the scam described above. Anything that requires you to pay money up front for a chance at something has a good chance of being a scam and should be investigated before any commitments have been made.

If you've done any research of online marketing methods, I'm sure you've heard about article marketing. But have you considered why you should add it as a tool to your online marketing kit?

After all, writing articles can take a lot of time, and not just the writing or editing part. To do it properly, you need to do keyword research first and that in and of itself can be a time consuming task unless you have a specific tool for the job.

So why SHOULD you consider article marketing as part of your overall strategy?

In order to answer that question, a little bit must be said about why people buy. Generally speaking people do not buy because they love spending money. They buy something that will solve a specific problem. And they absolutely hate to be sold to, preferring it to own their idea to buy.

Let's say for instance, your potential customer needs to drill a hole. A far better method than trying to compete with other drill sellers on features or price. Remember, people want better, faster and do not need care about features. Give them tips, show them best practices and they will convince themselves to buy your drill.

So what does the above story have to do with article marketing? Simple. The purpose of article marketing is twofold: first, you are branding yourself as the expert in your field, by giving away solid useful information for free and second, you will generate a long term traffic based on your keyword research. There are articles I've written years ago that still pull in traffic and sales.

Finally, article marketing is one of the cheapest forms of traffic available. Do not have time to write? Outsource. There are many freelance sites with writers available to do the work.

The beauty of this method is the fact that once you've written your articles and submitted them to article directories such as GoArticles or Ezine Articles, they can be re-purposed into any number of different materials, from a blog, to a Squidoo lens , and you can social bookmark them to generate even more traffic. You can also use them as a basis for videos and upload your videos to Youtube. In short you can use the articles that you write for many different facets of your marketing plan. And of course you can (and should) post all your articles to an archive section of your site.

Article marketing is not and should not be a "once only" method of traffic generation. To truly see the benefits, it needs to be an ongoing, consistent practice. True, article marketing does take some effort, but the results you will see will make it worth your while.

When people speak of marketing research, they are usually referring to quantitative research. Quantitative research involves a survey of a selected sample of a specific group using mail, telephone or in-person interviews.

Data is collected by means of a carefully constructed questionnaire that is pre-tested before the actual survey. Completed questions are edited, and verbatim responses to open-ended questions are coded using pre-developed categories. The data from the questionnaires is entered into a computer for tabulation of results. Final computer outputs, or "tables," are then ready for analysis. It is important for both research buyers and users to understand the strengths and weaknesses of each of the various research approaches so they can select the technique that best meets their needs at a cost within their budgets.

Mail Surveys

Mail Surveys were extremely popular during the 1950s and 60s when the costs of telephone interviewing were prohibitively high. Mail surveys are still widely used today, although the advent of the WATS telephone service has made telephone surveys much more cost competitive. The major strength of mail surveys is still their relatively low price. For the price of postage, materials and printing, a small business can conduct a very cost-effective research study. In addition, since the respondent actually receives materials from the researcher, illustrative or test documents can be included in the mail-out.

The major drawback to mail surveys is their very low rate of return, or response rate. Even with incentives such as money and second mailings, most end up with only about a 5 to 15 percent response rate. This means you do not know the opinions of 85 to 95 percent of the people you wish to study. In addition, those individuals who do not respond to a mail survey are often different from those who do. For example, older retirees are more likely to have the time and inclining to fill out and return a question while single people between the ages of 25 and 35 are much less likely to do so.

Different research techniques such as incentives and telephone reminders can boost the response rate to as much as 50 percent, but all these methods add to the price of the study, thereby defeating the purpose of selecting this technique in the first place.

In-Person Interviews

Many of us are familiar with in-person interviews. Every ten years, the US Census Department knocks on doors to conduct in-person interviews and find out how the population has changed. In-person, or personal interviews, involve a face-to-face meeting between an interviewer and a respondent. Using a prepared questionnaire, the interviewer requests the respondent a series of questions and carefully records the answers. These interviews take place either at the respondent's home or place of business or at a well-traveled location, such as a shopping mall.

Unlike mail surveys, personal interviews usually result in a very high completion rate. Response rates as high as 95 percent are not unheard of. In addition, in-person interviews allow the respondent to physically come in contact with proposed products, services or advertising under the guidance of the interviewer. This one-on-one interaction is why in-person interviews are often used in researching advertising copy or packaging designs.

The biggest problem with in-person interviews, however, is their extremely high price. Since an interviewer is required to either visit the correspondents at their homes or businesses or track them down in shopping malls, a great deal of interviewing time is required. Even at low hourly rates for interviewers, an in-person interview currently costs at least $ 100. Considering that most surveys use a sample size of at least 100 people, this approach can get very expensive.

Telephone Surveys

Computers have been introduced into the telephone interviewing process. Interviewers now sit in front of a computer screen and read from a pre-programmed questionnaire that appears in front of them. Respondents' replies are recorded directly into the computer system using a keyboard, which saves time in data entry and coding. Results are immediately available at any point during the survey. These "Computer Assisted Telephone Interviewing," or CATI, systems are becoming widely used by research companies and allow for faster, cheaper and more reliable interviewing.

While telephone surveys are much less expensive than in person interviews, they are usually slightly higher in price than a straight mail survey. Response rates with telephone surveys are much better than mail, typically 50 percent and higher, which makes them the ideal choice for most research applications.

"Timing the market" is considered by many to be a foolish exercise. Timing the market is indeed foolish if it is done the way many seem to think it is done. However, it is really a matter of having a good sell strategy or stop loss system coupled with a good buy strategy. Expert timers do not buy because they feel a stock is a "good" one to own, or sell because they feel it is "high." They buy because there has been a buy signal, and they sell because there has been a sell signal.

Some writers in the financial media color their articles with their own uninformed opinions rather than search out the facts. Let me give you an example of what I mean. In a recent well-known financial publication, a widely followed writer wrote about "market timing" and said that it has taken on a new meaning that differs markedly from the original meaning of the term. The term "market timing" has been used in reference to how some individuals trade mutual funds by illegally locking in an unfair price advantage and profiting on small pricing gaps between markets in different time zones. The writer mentioned above informed the reader that in the original definition, market timing involved shifting money into cash or bonds when the investor thinks stocks are overpriced and moving back into stocks when he or she thinks they are cheap. This author was correct with regard to the changing of the definition. However, he then went on to say what he thinks is wrong with the original timing concept.

The problem is that he leads his readers to assume timing decisions are based on what the timer "thinks" about the market and economy and what he believes "ought "to be the influence of such an environment on investments. This indeed appears to be the way most amateurs and some under-performing professionals practice "timing." Fund-provided data does show that there is more money flowing into funds at market highs and more withdrawals at market lows, reflecting how most people attempt to "time" their investments. This does show that, as a group, they are almost always wrong. In fact, that's why there is such a thing as a "conflicting market indicator" based on what the small investor is doing. It is an odd-lot volume indicator based on the fact that the small investor tends to increase his buying at the highs and increase his selling at the lows. Therefore, when there is mounting odd-lot buying (individual investors are "feeling good" about the market), professionals view it as a warning signal of an impending market downturn.

However, it is a fallacy to use this data to claim that it proves timing does not work. There are many excellent timers. Most professional "timers," the people who do it successfully, do not base timing activities on how they "feel" about the market. For example, our own traders generally do not say to themselves, "Interest rates are likely to rise, therefore I will avoid fixed-income investments because they will likely drop in value." While the idea is strategically sound in this case and the proposed course of action is correct, this thinking process does not resemble the way the most successful market timers make their buy and sell decisions. While there are some who base decisions on such things as their assessment of the economy or the effect of war on oil prices, most of the highly successful timers use a variety of technical indicators and focus on the current status of the market (what IS) rather than on what they think the market is going to do next. "Do we have a current sell signal or not?" Opinions about whether stocks are too high or too low have little to do with such strategies. For them, quantitative data, technical indicators, and action signals are the bases for their decision-making.

Let me illustrate with a few simple timing models. Let us absorb your goal is to capture the best returns you can by investing in any sector or market on the planet. To do this, you may decide to give your attention to ETFs. Therefore, you may rank all ETFs in the order of their strength. Assume that you have a way of measuring, as our model does, more persistent strength than that measured by the RSI. Your timing model might then be expressed as follows.
